If you’re searching for information about obtaining your Class 1 License in Quebec, one of the first things you need to understand is the new mandatory government training program.

Since December 15, 2025, every future Class 1 driver must successfully complete Quebec’s Road Safety Education Program (RSEP) before becoming eligible for the Class 1 road test.

If you’re familiar with trucking programs elsewhere in Canada, you may have heard of MELT (Mandatory Entry-Level Training). While Quebec uses a different name and curriculum, the objective is similar: ensuring every new professional truck driver receives standardized, high-quality education before entering the industry.

The RSEP program combines theoretical instruction with practical behind-the-wheel training, giving future drivers the knowledge, judgment and skills necessary to operate heavy vehicles safely and professionally.

Our Class 1 Truck Driving Course has been designed to fit around the schedules of working adults.

Step One — Online Theory Training

Your training begins with 75 hours of mandatory theory, taught live by experienced instructors.

English Classes

📅 Every Tuesday and Wednesday

🕕 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM

💻 Live on Zoom

📚 Total duration: approximately 9 weeks

Because classes are held in the evening, many of our students are able to continue working while completing the theoretical portion of the program.

During these classes, you’ll learn:

  • Road safety principles
  • Commercial vehicle regulations
  • Air brake systems
  • Defensive driving
  • Cargo securement fundamentals
  • Driver responsibilities
  • Trip planning
  • Professional driving techniques
  • Vehicle inspections (Circle Check)
  • Hazard recognition and risk management

At the conclusion of your theory training, you’ll complete the SAAQ theoretical examination.

Once successful, you’ll receive your Class 1 learner’s licence, allowing you to begin the practical driving portion of the program.

After obtaining your learner’s licence, you’ll begin your 50 hours of practical training.

Driving lessons are scheduled Monday through Friday between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM, allowing us to accommodate your availability.

Our goal is to provide consistency throughout your training.

Whenever possible, you’ll train with:

✔ The same instructor

✔ The same truck

This continuity helps students gain confidence much more quickly.

You’ll train using modern Freightliner and Kenworth tractors equipped with both automatic and manual transmissions.

The same truck used during your training will also be used for your final SAAQ road examination whenever possible.

Most students complete the practical portion within 2 to 3 months after obtaining their learner’s licence.

Before you can begin a Class 1 Truck Driving Course in Quebec, the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) requires every applicant to meet specific eligibility requirements.

Below are the most important admission requirements you should know before registering.

Driver’s Licence Experience Requirement

To qualify for a Class 1 License in Quebec, you must have accumulated at least 24 months of driving experience while holding either:

  • A full Class 5 driver’s licence (passenger vehicle), or
  • A probationary driver’s licence issued by the SAAQ.

International Driving Experience May Count

If you previously held a valid driver’s licence in another country, that driving experience may be recognized by the SAAQ toward the required 24 months.

However, this recognition is determined only by the SAAQ.

Important: Before enrolling in a Class 1 truck driving course, you must first obtain your Quebec Class 5 driver’s licence. During that process, the SAAQ will evaluate your foreign driving experience and determine how many months (or years) of experience can be credited toward the Class 1 eligibility requirements.

This is an essential first step for newcomers to Quebec who have previous driving experience outside Canada.

After successfully completing the required SAAQ theory examinations and obtaining your Class 1 learner’s licence, you must complete a mandatory learning period before taking the practical road test.

The standard waiting period is:

3 months

However, the waiting period is reduced to 1 month if you meet one of the following conditions:

  • You are 25 years of age or older
  • You have accumulated 60 months (5 years) of driving experience with a Class 5 licence
  • You already hold a Class 2 or Class 3 driver’s licence
  • You are enrolled in the Ministry of Education’s Professional Truck Driver Diploma (DEP) program and have successfully completed all mandatory pre-road training requirements

Before beginning your Class 1 training, applicants must also satisfy the following SAAQ requirements:

✔ Have no more than 3 demerit points currently on your driving record.

✔ Have no licence suspension or revocation during the previous two years resulting from:

  • Criminal Code driving offences, or
  • Excessive demerit points.

✔ Successfully complete the SAAQ vision test.

✔ Submit a satisfactory medical examination report (Form M-28) completed by a physician.

Medical examination fees are generally between $100 and $150, depending on the medical clinic.

Before starting the practical portion of your training, you will also need to complete the required SAAQ licensing process.

Typical government fees include:

  • Two Class 1 theory examinations: approximately $13.50 each
  • Class 1 learner’s licence issuance fee: approximately $88.35
  • Final practical examination: approximately $78.45, including:
    • Safety inspection (Circle Check)
    • On-road driving examination

Please note that SAAQ fees are established by the government and may change without notice.
